Recreation, Travel, Lodging, and Food Information

Recreation refers to any socially sanctioned activity of leisure that is contrary to work done every day. Studies show that the need to engage in recreational activities is integrated in human biology and psychology. It is part of human’s survival mechanism and personal development. It aims to give the mind and body break from work and thus restore the individual. The purpose of recreation is to engage in activities that bring pleasure, amusement, or enjoyment. They can be fun-filled or they can be relaxing.

Recreation has been closely associated with tourism - traveling to places outside one’s usual environment for recreation or leisure. Tourism has become a global recreational activity. On an average an estimated 940 million people engage in recreational travel every year. Some seek enjoyment in sightseeing, tasting foods or wine offered by a locality, or engaging in adventurous activities such as trekking, hiking, spelunking, or rock climbing.

Tourism takes place once a month or year and involves expenditure. Most of travel-related expenses are directed towards lodging and food. To save on such expenses, some people (particularly those going in group) use recreational vehicles such as park model trailer and campervan when traveling to a different city or locale. International travelers wishing to save on traveling expenses go backpacking. Backpacking is differentiated from other types of tourism or recreational travel in its emphasis on use of public transportation as a means of going from place to place, lodging in cheap hostels rather than hotels, and use of backpack.
